Jonathan CunninghamWho: The New MastersoundsWhere: Fisher Green StageWhen: Monday, Sept. 7, 4:00 p.m. If you know anything about British soul, then you already know Northern England was a hotbed for funk and soul during the earlier part of this decade. They’re not getting as much publicity for it now, but with bands like the New Mastersounds playing internationally, that might change again. The Leeds based four piece just played a solid set of organ-heavy jazz and funk that showcased why they’re a global talent. After joking with the crowd about how much the weather in Seattle reminded them of Northern England, they invited their long-time friend Skerik on stage and the far-out saxophone player (or blaxaphone player as they called him) came out and jammed for awhile. The crowd kept screaming Skerik’s name while he soloed and it was good to see so many young people into that kind of music.
