Welsh band Stereophonics made a splash in the States a decade ago with their debut album, Word Gets Around, which was among the finer discs of the Oasis-led Brit-pop movement of the mid-to-late ’90s, not to mention their excellent live show. Singing the small-town blues, frontman Kelly Jones possessed a compelling rasp, a knack for keen observation and character study and a love for classic Brit-rock like the Faces and Bad Company (along with fellow Welshmen Manic Street Preachers), and with his two bandmates, he crafted stadium rockers and ballads that always had heart. The threesome got huge in the U.K., but like so many of their Brit-pop brethren, failed to make much impact in America with their subsequent releases. There have been a few line-up changes over the years – original drummer Stuart Cable was fired a few years back, and Stereophonics are now a quartet – and though their most recent disc, last year’s Pull the Pin, hardly has the oomph and verve of their earlier work, the band is once again trying to make a go of it in the U.S. Hopefully they can re-create some of that old magic this time around.
