We Love Capitalism!

There was a poster taped up on lampposts all over Capitol Hill this spring that proclaimed: “Capitalism is Killing the Planet!” Well . . . maybe. But, hey, what a way to go. For this year’s Best of Seattle, we’re saluting the entrepreneurs and indie-business types who help make our city the fabulously fascinating place that it is. Thanks in large part to our local capitalist pigs, Seattle is a thriving, exciting, prosperous city, where the biggest problem is how to manage all our good fortune. Yes, we love all you nonprofits and social servants and collectives and all the priceless work that you do. Still, it’s the businesses that pay much of the bills and help create our street life, nightlife, and good life. So this year, we’re profiling some of our favorite Seattle captains of industry (and a few chief petty officers of industry)—from unique shops to aspiring chains. Also in the pages ahead, you’ll find the results of our readers’ poll, with Seattle Weekly readers’ picks for the city’s best in 65 categories. Plus: page after page of recommendations from the Weekly’s staff for where to find the Best of Seattle.
