Romeo et Juliette

PNB rotates its Romeo

There are more than 30 films listed on IMDB.com based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and more than 30 musical scores in the New York Public Library’s Performing Arts Collection—obviously this is a work that can support myriad interpretations, and as of today there will be two different versions in Pacific Northwest Ballet’s repertory. Former director Kent Stowell took an unusual approach when he made his R&J in 1987, compiling a score from symphonic and operatic music by Tchaikovsky, and current director Peter Boal is importing a new production from Europe by Jean-Christophe Maillot using the very familiar Prokofiev score. Maillot’s take on the young lovers emphasizes the “young”; there are moments of true adolescent gawkiness that resolve into deep tenderness, which makes the tragedy we know is coming just that much more painful.
